Day 1. Arusha / Moshi to Miriakamba Hut. (1000m ascent)
Drive from Moshi or Arusha up to Momella Gate, the car will pass some open grasslands and have a short game drive. You can see Buffalo, warthog and elephant etc. and then continue to pass through a montane forest. You will have your lunch at the famous “Fig tree”. After the lunch the trek continues through less dense forest, where there are a lot of birds and monkeys including black and white colubus. By midafternoon, there are first closer views of the towering cliffs and the Ash cone. It takes 4 to 6 hours walking to up to MIRIAKAMBA HUT 2514 Meters.
Day 2. Miriakamba to Saddle Hut. (1056m ascent)
From Marikamba the path climb climbs little steeply up through pleasant glades between the trees to reach Tope la mbogo (buffalo swamp)after 45 minutes and mongo wa tembo (Elephant Ridge) after 30 minutes. The ridge is now very obvious and it can be seen curving away and up to the summit, although it is still a long way. There are good views down into the crater, with the ash cone rising in the center. The pass is a little exposed as it traverses the rocky ridge, with fine views across into Kenya and the Maasai Hills. The Summit is reached after 5 – 6 hours. For energetic one, can make the short climb to the nearby summit of LITTLE MERU 3,820m for superb views just before sunset. It takes about 3 – 5 hours walking.
Day 3. Saddle Hut to Meru summit then Back to Saddle hut. (1000m ascend, plus 1000m descent).
5 km, 4 – 5 hour ascent plus 5 km, 2-3 hour descent. An early start at around 02 am to climb steeply to RHINO POINT (3800m) the path continues along an undulating ridge of ash and rock to reach Cobra point, at this point at rhino point you will have amazing Sunrise. From Rhino point the path drops slightly then rises again to climb steeply around the edge of the rim over ash scree and bare rock patches. Continue for 3 – 4 hours to reach Mt Meru summit – the socialist Peak (4566m). The views are spectacular, to the west, if it’s clear, you can see the town of Arusha, the Maasai steppe beyond.
To descend from the summit, simply retrace the route around the rim back to Saddle Hut (two to Three hours).
Day 4. Saddle Hut to Momela gate then Arusha/Moshi.
There are two ways down from here. You can either return through the forest (1 and a half hour to 2 and a half hours). From Miriakamba you can either return through the forest (2 and a half to 3 hours), or take a shorter route down the ridge that leads directly to Momela gate (1 and a half to 2 and a half hours). This direct route goes through forest then through open grassland and mixed forest with a great opportunity of seeing wild animals such as giraffes and Zebras.
