5 Days Usambala Mountains Hikking – Lushoto
Climbing OVERVIEW
The Usambara Mountains, located in northeastern Tanzania near Mkomazi National Park, are a hidden gem for hikers and nature lovers. Part of the Eastern Arc Mountains, which extend from Tanzania to Kenya, this area is recognized globally as a biodiversity hotspot. The mountains feature lush forests, fertile slopes, and breathtaking viewpoints. Visitors will find a unique blend of cultural experiences, traditional villages, and spectacular landscapes. With its mild, pleasant climate, the region is ideal for trekking, photography, and exploring local agriculture. Hiking in the Usambaras allows you to connect with nature while experiencing the local way of life.
Day 1: Arusha/Moshi → Lushoto
After breakfast in Arusha or Moshi, we depart for Lushoto, a picturesque town nestled in the Usambara Mountains. The journey through scenic landscapes provides glimpses of rural Tanzania and its lush vegetation. Upon arrival in Lushoto, guests will have lunch at a local restaurant or lodge. In the afternoon, we explore Irente View Point, which offers stunning panoramic views over the valleys below. Visitors will also have the chance to meet local farmers and learn about the region’s agricultural practices. As the sun sets, we enjoy a peaceful evening taking in the natural beauty before returning to our hotel for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 2: Lushoto → Magamba Forest → Lukozi Village
After breakfast, we begin our hike to the Magamba Forest Reserve, a lush, biodiverse area with tall trees, streams, and abundant birdlife. Along the trail, we visit a historic German trench from World War I, providing insight into the region’s colonial history. The hike continues to Magamba Village, where we stop for a freshly prepared local lunch. In the afternoon, we either hike or take local transport to Lukozi Village, passing through farmland and small communities. Evening activities include dinner and rest at Papaa Moze Lodge, where guests can enjoy the cool mountain air and the peaceful atmosphere of this remote, scenic area.
Day 3: Papaa Moze → Langwi Village
he day starts with breakfast at Papaa Moze Lodge before setting off on a hike through rolling hills, farmland, and vibrant villages. Along the trail, hikers will see vegetables like carrots, cabbage, and potatoes being cultivated and may spot chameleons and other wildlife along the path. The scenery offers multiple viewpoints perfect for photographs and short breaks. We stop for lunch in Makosi Village, enjoying local cuisine and interacting with the villagers. After lunch, the hike continues for a short distance to our accommodation at Langwi Sisters Guest House, where guests can relax, enjoy dinner, and experience the tranquility of village life surrounded by spectacular mountain scenery.
Day 4: Langwi → Mtae Village
After breakfast at Langwi Sisters Guest House, we continue hiking through the villages, passing bustling local markets where residents sell produce and handmade items. One of the highlights of the day is observing women crafting pottery using traditional methods, offering a unique cultural experience. Our hike continues through the lush mountains toward Mtae Village, a small, serene community known for its scenic beauty. In the evening, we reach Mambo View Point, where guests can enjoy a breathtaking sunset with views extending to Mount Kilimanjaro and Tsavo West National Park. Dinner and overnight accommodations are at Magumba Cottages or Mambo View Cliff Lodge, providing a comfortable stay amid nature.
Day 5: Mtae Village → Lushoto Town
We wake up early for breakfast in Mtae Village and prepare for the return journey to Lushoto. Guests using public transport should rise around 5:00 am to catch the 6:00 am bus, while private vehicles arrive later in the afternoon. Upon arrival in Lushoto, we enjoy lunch before exploring Kisasa Waterfall, a beautiful natural attraction offering a refreshing break and excellent photo opportunities. After visiting the waterfall, we return to the hotel for dinner and overnight. The following day, travelers can continue with their planned itinerary. This day provides a relaxing conclusion to a hiking adventure, allowing guests to reflect on the landscapes and cultural experiences they’ve encountered.
