This 6-day safari adventure from Dar es Salaam explores Southern Tanzania’s most diverse landscapes and wildlife. Discover Nyerere National Park with a scenic Rufiji River boat safari and thrilling game drives, then continue to Mikumi National Park for wide-open plains and abundant wildlife viewing. The journey concludes in the Udzungwa Mountains with a guided hike to the spectacular Sanje Waterfalls. Day 1: Dar es Salaam to Nyerere National Park
Your adventure begins with a pickup from your hotel in Dar es Salaam. After a scenic drive through the Tanzanian countryside, you’ll arrive at Nyerere National Park by afternoon. Upon arrival, enjoy a relaxing lunch before embarking on a boat safari along the mighty Rufiji River. This boat ride offers a unique perspective of the park’s wildlife, as you’ll likely spot large pods of hippos basking in the sun, crocodiles lurking in the water, and a wide variety of bird species flitting about. Later, return to your lodge for dinner and an overnight stay amidst the park’s natural beauty.
Day 2: Full day game drive in Nyerere National Park
Start your second day with a hearty breakfast, followed by an exciting full-day game drive in Nyerere National Park. Known for its large populations of elephants, buffaloes, and wild dogs, the park offers an excellent opportunity to spot these magnificent animals in their natural habitat. You’ll also have the chance to encounter lions lounging in the sun, crocodiles along the riverbanks, and hippos cooling off in the water. Other animals you may see include giraffes, kudus, and various antelope species. After a full day of exploration, enjoy a delicious dinner and a restful night at the same lodge.
Day 3: Nyerere to Mikumi National Park
On Day 3, you’ll depart Nyerere National Park in the morning and embark on a scenic drive toward Mikumi National Park. As you journey through the northern parts of Nyerere, the landscape will transition, showcasing the beautiful diversity of Tanzania’s ecosystems. Arriving in Mikumi by the late afternoon, you’ll have a chance to stretch your legs and enjoy an evening game drive. Mikumi is home to a rich variety of wildlife, including elephants, giraffes, zebras, and lions. After the game drive, head back to your lodge for a relaxing dinner and an overnight stay surrounded by nature.
Day 4: Full day game drive in Mikumi National Park
After breakfast, you’ll head out for a full day of exploration in Mikumi National Park, one of Tanzania’s most accessible and diverse wildlife areas. The park’s wide-open plains make it ideal for spotting large herds of elephants and giraffes, as well as elands, zebras, and wildebeests. Don’t forget to visit the hippo pool, where you can observe these fascinating creatures as they spend most of their time submerged in the water. The day will be filled with opportunities to witness the daily life of the park’s animals, so have your camera ready! In the evening, enjoy dinner and an overnight stay.
Day 5: Hiking to Udzungwa Mountains – Sanje Waterfall
Today’s adventure takes you to the Udzungwa Mountains, where you’ll embark on a hiking expedition to the stunning Sanje Waterfalls. After breakfast, you’ll register at the park office before starting your trek through the lush montane forest. Along the way, you may spot various species of butterflies, colorful birds, and primates like colobus monkeys. The highlight of the hike is reaching the breathtaking Sanje Waterfalls, where you can take in panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. After a refreshing break at the falls, you’ll descend back to the base for dinner and overnight at your accommodation in Udzungwa.
Day 6: Transfer back to Dar es Salaam
After a memorable trip exploring Tanzania’s most iconic parks, Day 6 marks your journey back to Dar es Salaam. Following an early breakfast, you’ll begin the drive back to the city, stopping for a packed lunch along the way. As you leave the wild landscapes of the national parks behind, reflect on the incredible wildlife encounters, breathtaking views, and unforgettable experiences of the past five days. You’ll arrive in Dar es Salaam in the late afternoon or early evening, where you’ll be dropped off at your hotel or the airport, concluding your 6-day Tanzanian safari adventure.
