Overview
7-day Kilimanjaro – Rongai Route is the only trail that starts from the Northern side of Mount Kilimanjaro. The North – East side of the mountain gets significantly less moisture than the Southern slopes which means that the trekkers are also more likely to get Clear, unclosed views of the Mountain.
Rongai route can be hiked on six or seven or eight days routes. The 7 or 8 days Rongai route is highly recommended as trekkers have extra days to acclimatize.

Day 1. Rongai start point (1950 meters) to Simba Camp (2,620 Meters).
Distance 8km/5 miles, hiking time 4 – 5 hours, Zone – Rainforest.
On day one Rongai route hikers are transferred from Either Moshi or Arusha to Marangu gate for Registration before being shuttled a further 70 kilometers to the starting point at 1,950 meters. The trekkers will start hiking at Moru village and pass through maize fields before entering the Rainforest. If you are lucky enough, you may have a chance to see colubus monkeys or even buffaloes. The first day hiking is very simple and will be at the Camp around mid-afternoon.
Day 2. Simba Camp – (2,620 meters to Second Cave Camp 3,480 meters).
Distance 5km/3.1 miles, hiking time 3-4 hours, Zone – Rainforest/Low Alpine Zone.
On day two the trekkers hike continues from Simba camp through the rainforest before transitioning into the low alpine moorland zone where you will notice the vegetation change to shrubs and grasses.
Day 3. Second Cave Camp 3480 meters to Kikelewa Camp 3630 meters.
Distance 5 km/3.1 miles, hiking time 3-4 hours,
Leaving the alpine forest behind we carry on with a steady ascent walking though moorland. There are superb views of the Eastern ice fields on the crater rim of Kibo, the highest of the three volcanoes which form the mountain. We will leave the main trail and strike out across moorland on a smaller path towards the jagged peaks of Mawenzi, the second of Kilimanjaro’s volcanoes.
Kikelewa Camp 3630 meters to Mawenzi Tarn Hut 4310 meters.
Distance 8 km/5 miles, hiking time 4-5 hours,
This morning we have a short but steep ascent up grassy slopes which is rewarded by a superb view of Kenyan Plains to the north. We leave vegetation behind shortly before reaching our next camp at Mawenzi Tarn hut directly below the towering cliffs of Mawenzi. This afternoon you have chance to rest or explore the surrounding area to aid acclimatization.
Mawenzi Tarn Hut 4310meters to Kibo Hut 4700 meters.
Distance 8km/5 miles, hiking time 5-6 hours,
We leave our Campsite and cross the lunar desert of the ‘saddle’ between Mawenzi and Kibo, after couple of hours of trekking we reach the spectacular place, with the summit of Kilimanjaro in the background and our trail to the high camp stretched out camp the remainder of the day will be spent resting in the preparation of the final ascent after a very early night!
Kibo Hut 4700 meters to Uhuru Peak 5895 & Down to Horombo Hut 3700 meters.
Distance 22 km/13.7 miles, hiking time 12 – 15 hours,
Today is The Big day – like the Exams! The final stage. You will begin your final ascent around midnight which will be long and strenuous. Passing the Hans Meyer Cave at 5220m, the climb slowly but surely goes upwards. At sunrise, you will reach Gillman’s point (5681 m) – the crater rim of Kilimanjaro where the sun will slowly start to warm up the land. You will have soon forgotten the cold of the night and after a further hike of 1 – 2 hours, you will reach Uhuru Peak at 5895m. On your return to Kibo hut, a warm meal awaits you followed by a 1-2 hour break before proceeding back down to horombo Hut.
Horombo hut 3700 m to Marangu Gate 1860 m.
Distance 20.8 km/12.9 miles, hiking time 8 hours,
The last stage passes through the heath and moor zone to the Mandara Hut (2700 m) where a warm lunch is waiting for you. Soon you will once again pass the tropical rainforest and after a total time of 6 hours trekking, you will be back at the Kilimanjaro National Park Gate (1860 m). After saying goodbye to your mountain guides and the whole team, a transfer to Moshi or Arusha will follow.
