About Mikumi National Park

Mikumi National Park is one of Tanzania’s most accessible and underrated wildlife destinations, located about 283 km (175 miles) west of Dar es Salaam. Covering an area of 3,230 square kilometers, it forms part of the vast Selous Ecosystem, which is the largest in Africa. Often called the “mini Serengeti,” Mikumi features open savannahs, acacia woodlands, and the beautiful Uluguru Mountains in the distance.

The park is home to a remarkable variety of wildlife, including elephants, lions, zebras, giraffes, buffaloes, wildebeests, hippos, leopards, and more than 400 bird species. The Mkata Floodplain is the heart of Mikumi, providing excellent game viewing opportunities — especially during the dry season (June to October) when animals gather near water sources.

Mikumi’s proximity to Dar es Salaam makes it ideal for short safaris, weekend getaways, or as an extension to a longer Southern Circuit itinerary that includes Ruaha National Park or Selous Game Reserve (Nyerere National Park).
